OK, I'M back from a nice, long summer vacation and ready to amp this thing up. Next week we’re going to feature our College issue, with a big Fall Arts preview issue soon after that. I always write an account in the paper of my travels, for two reasons: 1) I really enjoy travel writing; and 2).

The Boston.com segment "The Big Picture" has an overview of some fantastic photos of London "from above, at night". They are the work of aerial photographer Jason Hawkes and are the most beautiful aerial photos I have ever seen. The photos were taken from a helicopter, using a digital camera mounted on a gyroscopic mount and the article has photos of most major London attractions.

Stonehenge

Since we arrived in London, it has been unseasonably cold and rainy. I was exhilarating to see a blue sunny sky on the day we traveled through country roads to see the famous Stonehenge. I read about this prehistoric monument in books. I watched it on the Discovery channel. Finally, I saw the Stonehenge with my own eyes.

Terry plays down England's World Cup chances

England captain John Terry is unusually reticent about his team's chances of glory ahead of next month's World Cup qualification campaign. Normally, a warmup match such as Wednesday's friendly against the visiting Czech Republic would be preceded by comments from the squad about how they feel equipped to win England's first title since the 1966 World Cup.

Deal or no deal? 6 fares to London in September
Posted on Jul 27 2008 10:53 PM by adeal

I visited with some friends from London last night and of course I wanted to go back after reminiscing about past visits. But is there a deal to be found? Flights right now between Los Angeles and London are around $1,300 round trip including tax. But late-summer and fall months are known for cheaper prices. In this travel climate, can we find a deal to London? Here are my search results — let me know if you’ve found a cheaper way.

While we’re happily enjoying the fruits of summer, it’s not too soon to think ahead to the legendary autumnal foliage of eastern Canada and New England. We pinned down a set of cruises that coincide with the traditional peaks of fall color in the region — from the end of September through mid-October — with prices sure to make you ooh and ahh. Trips along the scenic route start at a spectacular $649!

Fountains Abbey

Today we went to Fountains Abbey. It is Britain's largest monastic ruin, founded in 1132 by 13 Benedictine monks. It was sold in 1540 to a merchant following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539 by Henry VIII.
I tried not to go overboard on the photos in this section.

London

We arrived in Gatwick Airport around 1pm and headed to town. We stowed our bags at Waterloo (home of the most Nazi bag inspector yet) and explored the local area. This meant we got to see South Bank, the Millennium eye (which has always struck me as been a Ferris Wheel rather then an Eye), Westminster and Big Ben. After looking around town we met Jess who gave us a key to Daniel’s place (who unfortunately happened to be away at this time.).

Anna Kainberger is taking a year-out from her career to travel in south-east Asia, and Australasia, along with Fiji and the USA. This month she is reporting from New Zealand and Fiji. Here is her 23rd blog entry: New Zealand took it out of me, I have to say. I had spent nearly six weeks exploring the South and North Islands of New Zealand, which meant that I moved on average every two days to make sure I got to see the better part of it.

New England Road Trip

New England is the perfect place to go for an early summer road trip. The flowers have bloomed, humidity is still fairly tolerable and the hoards of tourists are still at bay for a few more weeks. Although this northeastern corner of the United States may seem small in size, it packs a lot in terms of culture, food, history and attractions. You can decide between stops at quaint beach towns to bustling cities all along the Atlantic coast.

Your kids may even learn something... but it's probably a good idea if you don't let on.
