The Giant Three-Headed Elephant
Posted on Jul 18 2008 12:14 AM by adeal

The biggest tourist attraction in Samut Prakan now is undoubtedly the Erawan Museum (Chang Erawan). This giant three-headed elephant is an incredible 29 metres high and 39 metres long. If you count the building it stands on, then the height is 43.6 metres. A small window in the belly of the elephant gives you some fine views of the surrounding area.

Temple Fair at Night

Here are some pictures for you of the temple fair in Samut Prakan. It was raining for most of the evening so I wasn’t able to go out until after 10 p.m. I took these pictures about an hour ago and despite the late hour there were still quite a few people around.

About Jomtien, Pattaya (Thailand)
Posted on Jul 18 2008 12:11 AM by adeal

Long before Pattaya became a famous destination – Jomtien Beach had already carved a niche of its own, at least among the local beachgoers who adored it for its pearly white sands and long straight beach. Albeit a little late, there’s a renewed tourist interest in Jomtien from around the World. On an ordinary day, the resort looks like a busy carnival ground with colorful umbrellas dotting the whole stretch of the beach and sun worshippers in all kinds of swimwear-spicing up the scene.

Wrapping up New Zealand and the beginning of SE Asia
Posted on Jul 17 2008 11:57 PM by adeal

So it has been about 3 months since I last updated this blog. I will try to keep it short because the internet connection I’m on keeps failing me. At the end of April was mid-semester break (aka a random week off) so Eve and I rented a car and drove up to the north part of the south island. We spent a few days hiking the Able Tasman great walk and afterwards slowly made our way back down the east coast.

The Tiger Cave Temple

When we first set up Thai-Blogs.com, it was our intention on not only giving you an insight into Thai life and culture, but also showing you a bit of “Unseen Thailand”. After all, it has been the long-running mandate of Paknam Web to “Promote Thailand to the World”. If you already know Thailand, then we want you to love it more. If you have never been here before, then we would very much like it if you spend your next holiday here in Thailand.

Boat Trip in Bangkok
Posted on Jul 16 2008 12:12 AM by adeal

I was in Bangkok last week in order to take some pictures for our web sites. I love doing boat trips and I thought I would explore the river north of the city. I have explored the canals before on the Thonburi side of the river in a long-tailed boat (see picture to the right). You can hire these boats for about an hour or so for about 400 baht from the pier near the Grand Palace. But, this time I wanted to explore on public transport.

A Trip to Koh Si Chang
Posted on Jul 13 2008 11:46 PM by adeal

This is a continuation of my series of blogs about day trips from Bangkok. I am aiming to give you at least two new destinations every month. The little island I visited today, known as Koh Si Chang, has been on my list of places to visit for a long time. It is not that I have heard spectacular things about this island. It is certainly no Koh Samet. You also cannot really label it “Unseen Thailand” as you will find it in the Lonely Planet, amongst other guidebooks.

Bangsaen Beach

On the spur of the moment, I decided to drive down to Bangsaen Beach this morning. I had been thinking about going there for a while ever since a friend of mine said he had enjoyed a couple of visits there recently. I kept putting it off, but then I noticed in the Bangkok Post on Friday that there was going to be a seafood festival at the weekend. Seemed like a good excuse to go. It didn't really matter I don't like seafood that much. Any good excuse for a road trip.

Northeast Thailand

We spent 10 peaceful days in an Isan village in north - east Thailand with our son , 17 month old grandson , and daughter-in-law at Nui’s parents’ house. We were really well looked after and enjoyed every minute of it. Such friendly, hospitable people. During the time we visited Ban Chiang National Museum which was excellent. It was declared a Unesco World Heritage site 16 years ago , being one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia.

New natural & cultural World Heritage Sites from UNESCO

UNESCO has added 27 new sites to the list of World Heritage Sites — eight natural and 19 cultural. If you think you’re an expert in world travel, you might want to take a look at the list and see if you’ve been to, or even heard of, some of the locations. I’ve got some studying to do because the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Mexico is the only one that I’d heard of.

Krabi and more pictures
Posted on Jul 10 2008 10:56 PM by adeal

Arrived in Krabi 6pm last night. Beautiful views coming in of the limestone cliffs and the mountains. The airport (and our plane) was 90% tourist. Krabi is a relatively small town (~20,000 people) and mostly a jumping off point for beach destinations nearby. We checked into a new guesthouse, this time with no A/C. It was a bit of a sweaty night, but not too bad. Lots of noise from the streets though.

The Fourth Day of Songkran
Posted on Jul 09 2008 12:27 AM by adeal

The enthusiasm for waterfights is certainly slowing down now on what is the fourth day. I took this picture on a street corner this afternoon. There were only a handful of pickup trucks roaming the streets and a few kids alongside roads staging ambushes against unsuspecting people. They say that some parts of the country only have waterfights for one day.

A Magic Day At Khao Phra Vihaan

Some of the great attractions for visitors to South East Asia are the Angkor period Khmer monuments that can be found stretching from Angkor Wat in Cambodia to the various monuments that can be found in North-East Thailand. The principal monuments in Isaan are Prasad Hin Phimai, Phanom Rung Hill and Khao Phra Vihaan.
Prasad Hin Phimai and Phanom Rung are probably the most well known of the three principal Khmer monuments in Isaan with the subject of this blog – Khao Phra Vihaan not as well known due to its relative isolation.

Doi Tung (Mae Fa Luang)

We left Doi Mae Salong in the late afternoon and continued driving through the mountains passing more tea plantations along the way. As the sun was setting and dusk was upon us, we finally made it to the relative safety of Highway 1. Although we were only halfway to Chiang Rai City, the multi-laned highway meant we could cover the remaining distance in little over half an hour. We then used this city as a base over the next few days to explore the province further.

A Trip to Koh Kret
Posted on Jul 07 2008 11:27 PM by adeal

A few days back I was telling you about my recent trip upriver from Bangkok to Nonthaburi Province by public boat. My intention was not to just view the scenery but also to make my way up to an island called Koh Kret. I had heard about this place for several years now and wanted to go and visit for myself. It sounded mysterious. An island in the middle of the Chao Phraya River? How could that be? I tried to do some research but most of my guidebooks barely gave the place more than a paragraph worth of coverage.
