when, with the tourist season more than halfway through, only two living beings could be seen in Naran’s (Kaghan Valley) once-bustling bazaar when the sun was at its zenith: an emaciated old stray dog and this correspondent. That was just eight months after the killer earthquake of October 2005, which reduced the whole area to rubble.

For me a critical aspect of exploring a culture is seeing how they install their values in the next generation. Comparisons between the Pakistani school system and our own is not fair. This is a Third World Country. We in the west are setting the standards for education; and the rest of the world is hanging on our coattails. I am pleased with what I have seen and learned on this latest adventure. A decade ago Ontario schools were in the infancy of a new curriculum.

The Snow Lake trek is an extremely challenging proposition. Crevasses on the Biafo and Hispar Glaciers have claimed lives, and blizzards, whiteouts, and tricky, crevasse-obscuring snow cover are possible throughout the year. Even with a guide, you'll need solid route-finding, compass-reading, and rope skills. It's called Lupke Lawo, or Snow Lake, and it's not just a lake but a ten-mile-wide glacial basin at 15,000 feet, ringed by the jagged high peaks of the Karakoram Range.

The Badshahi Mosque (بادشاھی مسجد) or "Emperor's Mosque" was built in 1673 by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in Lahore, Pakistan. It is one of the city's best known landmarks and a major tourist attraction epitomising the beauty and grandeur of the Mughal era.
Capable of accommodating over 55,000 worshippers, Badshahi is the second largest mosque in Pakistan, after the Faisal Mosque in Islamabad. The design of the Badshahi Masjid is closely related to the Jama Masjid in Delhi, India, which was built in 1648 by Aurangzeb's father, Emperor Shah Jahan.
Badshahi Masjid is one of the famous locations where Qari Basit (1927-88), a widely acclaimed Egyptian Qur'anic Recitor, recited the Qur'an.
