The Agora, Athens’ ancient marketplace
Posted on Apr 20 2008 4:57 AM by adnana

Athens’ ancient marketplace, founded in the 6th century BC, was the heart of the city for 1,200 years. It was the centre for all civic activities, including politics, commerce, philosophy, religion, arts and athletics. This is where Socrates addressed his public, where democracy was born and where St Paul preached. Because of its varied uses, the rambling site can be confusing. But, unlike the sweltering Acropolis, the grassy Agora is a great place to wander, imagining the lively bustle that once filled this historic centre.

Greece: a deep respect for tradition, a deep love of good times

Having exported chaos, drama, tragedy and democracy before most nations were staying up late enough to want souvlaki, Greece boasts an unrivalled legacy. But don't expect a visit there to be a sober study of the ancient world - the Greek propensity for partying dates back to Dionysos.

From sometimes smoggy Athens to blindingly bright islands, ancient fragments abound - the navel of the cosmos at Delphi, fallen columns galore on the sacred island of Delos, frescoed Minoan palaces on Crete and even - as some might believe - the remnants of Atlantis at Santorini.

Thessaloniki - City of Contrasts
Posted on Apr 01 2008 5:05 AM by adnana

Mention Greece and the first place most people think of is Athens, a cultural and historical metropolis dating back to the dawn of civilization. With a population of five million Athens is an exciting and vibrant place - a typical capital city.

Perhaps not as famous but with a historical heritage equal to and probably more diverse than Athens is Greece's second city, Thessaloniki. Situated on the Gulf of Thermaikos in the Aegean Sea, the city is a strategic trading port for northern Greece and the Balkans. It is also renowned for the universities and colleges that attract students from all over Europe. Thessaloniki has a rich cultural heritage, dating back many centuries. There are references to Thessaloniki in the New Testament, the most famous of which are St Paul's letters to the Thessalonians, the oldest records of Christian literature.

The city was founded in 315 BC by King Cassander of Macedonia, on a site of old monuments dating back to 2300 BC. It was named after his wife Thessalonica, who was Alexander the Great's sister. Over the years, Thessaloniki has suffered invasions by many cultures, including Slavs, Arabs, Saraces, Normans, Catalans, Turks and Nazis. It is testament to the strength of this city that it has prevailed through each incursion, with its ancient Byzantine monuments intact.

Greece, the birthplace of democracy, is a beautiful, rugged country, steeped in history. It has nearly 1600 islands, but only 170 of them are inhabited. Half of the ten million population live in Athens.
This bustling city is a good central point from which to see Greece. The white marble Parthenon on Acropolis Hill is a breathtaking sight. The Acropolis is sometimes called the sacred rock. It sits on top of a 512-foot high limestone rock and was originally built to defend the city in 1500 BC, destroyed 1000 years later, and rebuilt in 450 BC.

There are three other buildings on the site besides the Parthenon. The Erechtheum is a temple honoring Athena and Poseidon. The Propylea is a monumental gateway. To its right stands the Temple of Athena Nyke or Wingless Victory. The newest building, The Acropolis Museum, houses many works of art discovered since excavation began in 1835.Read the rest of this entry »

Shopping in Greece

Shopping in Greece is among one of the many pleasures to be had during your vacation in Hellas. From crafts, to food and wine items, to the latest fashions from top designers, while shopping in Greece ,you will find any number of items to bring back with you when it’s time to go. Shopping in Athens Greece is akin to big city shopping in Paris and New York and if you are there in the winter, you can often find some great bargains. If you are visiting the islands, you will find a bunch of unique items that will serve to remind you of the wonderful time you had during your travels in Greece.

The first thing to do when planning to go shopping in Greece is get comfortable with the currency in Greece. Like many other countries in the European Union, the original Greece currency switched to the Euro a couple years back. No other currency is readily accepted in Greece, and the best place to change your dollars into euros is at a bank. You can also change your money at the airport, but ideally you will just change enough there to get you going. At the new Athens airport, you can change some of your money into Greece currency at several machines if you just need a little spare dough to grab a bite or something. The banks in Greece are typically open from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. The Great thing about the currency in Greece is that it is the same as the majority of other European nations, meaning once you’ve changed money, you can head to Italy or France without having to worry about it again and again.
