We were thinking about heading to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in February — weather-wise, it’s a great time to be there, plus it happens to be when a relative has a time share available for us to use. But we just returned from Costa Rica and don’t feel we can afford another splash-out for international flights so soon. But American Airlines is trying to convince us otherwise, it seems…. Deal: With its current Mexico sale, you can fetch a midweek flight to Los Cabos (SJD) from LAX for $92 one-way, pre-tax, per person.

There are several excellent vegetarian restaurants in Mexico City. Last week I went to “Vegetarian Yug” in the Zona Rosa on Varsovia between Reforma and Hamburgo. It was excellent! I reccomend the Molcajete (Mexicana or Santa Cruz). It is essentially a queso fundiddo with lots of vegetables and Soyrizo. But one order is enough food for two people. The soups were excellent too. There is a lunch buffet as well between 1 and 5PM.

Transvestites are a rare sight in a culture that puts a premium on machismo. But don't tell that to the people of Juchitan, a town near Mexico's Pacific coast. The town's Zapotec population held an annual fiesta over the past weekend. The reason for the party: to celebrate the local muxes (transvestites) and to mark the end of the harvest season. Why are transvestites revered in this corner of the country? According to Zapotec culture, people with traits from both genders are considered wise and powerful because they are said to have an understanding of both the male and female mind.

News from south of the border lately hasn’t been easy to digest. With incidents of intense violence, mostly related to drug cartels, in various parts of Mexico, it’s no wonder many are looking elsewhere for their vacations. But don’t dismiss Mexico just yet. After all, the country, with a vast array of cultural and historical attractions, not to mention great beaches, has long lured us south for good reason. In his article “5 favorite vacation spots in Mexico,” Reed Johnson recommended five.

On Tuesday, the U.S. State Department updated its travel alert for Mexico, adding Nogales to its list of places where American citizens should be particularly cautious. The border city in the state of Sonora, along with Cuidad Juarez and Tijuana, are “among the cities which have recently experienced public shootouts during daylight hours in shopping centers and other public venues,” said the alert.

Construction commenced last month on Mexico’s purported next big draw: a large-scale tourist resort in the state of Sinaloa. Teacapan, 75 miles south of the nearest tourist hub of Mazatlan, is a Pacific beach resort that will be twice as large as Cancun if all goes according to plan. It will encompass over seven miles of beach and two marinas, and it is estimated to see over 3 million visitors annually.

So apparently all of us gringos out there think that Cinco de Mayo is a big holiday for Mexicans, however it is actually not that big of deal. So apparently for us Americans who go out to eat on the 5th of May at the closest establishment with colorful lights, multi-colored tapestries on the wall, and chimichangas on the menu (which they don't even eat here).

Today we all got up bright and early, even though it was Domingo (Sunday) and headed off to our first ruins. My Mexican mother stuffed me with food once again, fresh fruit, pan (sweet bread), cereal (frosted flakes this time), mango juice and a fresh Oaxacan cheese and avocado tortilla. How does one explain in Spanish that a big breakfast to me is yogurt and granola?

My journey from Belize to Mexico turned out to be pretty awful. The bus decided to show up at 11.30am, an hour late, and despite having paid a first class price it turned out to be a cramped little minibus with no air-conditioning so not very pleasant with the sun beating down on us. Still, it "only" took four and a half hours to get to Chetumal in Mexico.

I have arrived and settled in at my new home in Xalapa, Mexico! I arrived Wednesday night around 8pm after a five hour plane ride to Mexico City and another five hours aboard a bus to Xalapa. The plane ride passed in a sleepy daze but the bus ride was beautiful, cutting through the expansive country side of Mexico.
