I have arrived and settled in at my new home in Xalapa, Mexico! I arrived Wednesday night around 8pm after a five hour plane ride to Mexico City and another five hours aboard a bus to Xalapa. The plane ride passed in a sleepy daze but the bus ride was beautiful, cutting through the expansive country side of Mexico.

Historic, leafy, easy-to-navigate and a competent producer of fresh lemonade (mmm..), Boston has been a relaxing alternative to being evacuated to a backwater of Louisiana during Hurricane Gustav. Our first hotel choice wasn't the greatest (the itinerant woman periodically going through the hotel garbage put us off a little).

This picture taken by jrodmanjr of a fireworks display in San Francisco really caught my eye. Notice how the bright lights coming from the Bay Bridge create a bit of a vignette around the picture. The low light makes it tough to get a super crisp shot in these situations, but jrodmanjr did a nice job with this one.

The shorter days and cooler nights mean that summer is ending. There are some consolations to be found in the arrival of fall, however. The kids go back to school, it's easier to get to sleep at night, and the Okanagan Fall Wine Festival is rolling into view. The annual celebration of the harvest goes October 2 to 12 and it's the most fun you can have in wine country without getting your feet dirty.

Though we’re still officially in summer, my travel mindset is now firmly planted in a more serious-minded fall, where it’ll take a darn good deal to get me to consider adding extra trips to my already-full schedule. Thankfully for my travel-obsessed self, the darn good deals are rampant, at least in the hotels sector (flights are another story).

With this crap out of the way, we can turn our attention to art beyond the capabilities of any three-year-old -- make an informed, subtle statement about culture and globalization, for example. The Foley Gallery's "Games of Consequence" -- a collection of photography by Polixeni Papapetrou -- carves into the physical and cultural landscape of rural Australia.

Raise your hand if you've had to change your travel plans in the last year due to budget constraints. Just about everybody, huh? Travelers who fly to their vacation destinations have had a rough time this year. Fares are up across the board, except in the cases where whole airlines have ceased operations entirely.
