Thailand has hundreds of spas to choose from, and these days they range from the breathtakingly expensive to the bargain priced. As with everything, the amount of money you pay doesn’t necessarily reflect the quality of experience you get - the places where you tend to have the best time are those where the owners and staff of the business really care about your wellbeing, even if their surroundings are quite humble.

Angelina Jolie opted for the modest but stunningly beautiful Sukantara spa, hidden away in the hills of Chiang Mai. While the likes of David Beckham and Kate Moss head for self-consciously super luxury spas in Thailand such as Chiva Som in Hua Hin, Angelina opted for somewhere more discreet while visiting Thailand back in 2004 along with her son Maddox. Evidently she enjoyed her stay, as shown by her handwritten testimonial (click the button marked ‘testimonial’ to see it) and the couple of photos of her at the resort on the spa’s own site.
